Comment Live Preview

This plugin adds a Live Preview box to your comments. What does that mean? While the visitor is typing a comment, the result i.e. what the comment will look like appears below.

Comment Live Preview plugin uses a javascript file (.js), that applies similar formatting to WP texturize and auto-paragraph functionality. Among others:

  • Converts empty lines to paragraphs
  • Converts (c), (r) and ™ to ©, ® and ™ respectively
  • Converts — and — to — and — respectively
  • Converts the apostroph, single and double quotes. For example: it’s “double” or ’single’

The known bug for IE/XP has been fixed. Thank you guys for reporting this. Please let me know for any other problems.

March 2th, 2005

The plugin has been updated in order to work with WordPress 1.5 “Strayhorn”. Also you may find interesting this plugin, by Jeff and me (works only for 1.5 – easier to install).

How to Install

  • Download the zip file.
  • Extract and upload the content into you wp-content/plugins directory.
  • Activate the plugin with one click in your Admin Options-> Plugin Mangagement page.
  • Finally you should indicate where you want your preview to appear. Just place, in your wp-comments.php or wp-comments-popup.php file, the following line of code:
<?php live_preview ?>

Tom, thank you for the feedback.

As far as I know, TinyMCEComments plugin does not only place a regular formatting toolbar in the comments form but allows the instead preview of the comment as well. In other words, TinyMCEComments is a WYSIWYG editor and therefore there is no purpose in having installed both plugins (since the live preview output will look exactly the same with the content of the editor).

  9. JD:

Any idea why this does not seem to be working on internet explorer 7 on my site but does work in firefox?

    Thanks in advance!

My site can be seen: http://www.sportech.info/

    Thanks for your help!

  10. JD:

Thanks for responding lacovos. I’m glad you still support this plugin and help users out. Take your time. If someone comes to my website with IE7 they should be taken out back and shot anyways. LOL

Honestly? No :) It appears to be a javascript issue since it works in Firefox. Unfortunately, I can not access your website through IE7 at the moment. Once I get the chance (probably on library PCs) I will have a look and get back to you.

    Thank you for reporting this!

    Hi Iacovos,
    One comment and a question.
    1. Good news. Your Greeklish pluginin works fine on the brand new wordpress 2.3 Great job
    2. The question is about Comment live Preview. I downloaded the version at http://dev.wp-plugins.org/wiki/LiveCommentPreview It works fine in wordpress 2.3 as well. Still, I would like to have it shown just BEFORE the comment for reasons like the ones pointed out at http://lorelle.wordpress.com/2006/04/01/comment-live-preview-placement/.
You say that it can be done by fixing the wp-comments.php or wp-comments-popup.php files. I do not want to do that and have to remember it for every theme and every upgrade. So what must I change in the plugin itself. Thanx in advance.

  13. Iacovos: Author comment

Thank you Mihalis for your feedback.

These instructions are very old and obviously I have to update them! You don’t have to edit the wp-comments.php file but the comments.php file that is located in your theme directory.

  14. Mihalis:

Thank you for the quick reply.
Still, I think you must really update this beautiful plugin. Furthermore, see if you could come up with some kind of solution for the whole process of changing the position to come within the plugin. It would become so much more user friendly.
I tried placing the code to different places but does not work. Having said all that I have to admit I know next to nothing when it comes to coding. So I uploaded the comments.php (renamed it to .txt) of one of my themes at http://test.aenaon.info/blog23/wp-content/uploads/comments.txt.
Could you be so kind to show me where and what code to add.

Oh man, I really have to update this page :)

The right piece of code is <?php live_preview(); ?>

  16. Mihalis:

Sorry to put you through all this , but….. I think you do need some spring cleaning. LOL
Anyway. It works like a charm. Thank you so much.
    Mihalis

  17. Mihalis:

By the way, I updated the headings in your file AND played arround with it a bit to get a “greek” version for myself. Have a look at it at: http://test.aenaon.info/blog23/wp-content/uploads/live-comment-preview.txt and feel free to use as you like.
    Thanx again,
    Mihalis
